Being a fashion editor and stylist for over a decade, I can tell you one thing from personal experience: styling over 40 has always been a pain in the neck for many.
The biggest reason? There are very limited sources available when it comes to styling tips for those over 40. So, I decided to create this piece with the help of my colleagues and the experience I’ve gathered over the years.
But before I go any further, I wanna repeat this cliché: “Age is just a number.”
Fashion doesn’t have boundaries if you know the right styling tips. In fact, many people take inspiration from celebs who are over 40. Why? Because they have a fashion stylist who knows what works best.
Now, there’s one question that might pop into everyone’s mind: I don’t have a fashion stylist! Don’t worry one bit—I’m here to help!
In this blog post, I’m gonna spill all the beans on styling over 40. So, without further ado, let’s get into the main topic.
Foundation Pieces
1. Get the Perfect Bra Fitting
SaveOh my gosh, this is so important I could cry!
So many people wear the wrong bra size—and I get it, bra shopping is the worst. But you have to wear a good bra because it’s the foundation for every single outfit you’ll ever wear.
Don’t just go by the size tag. Many brands don’t fit as expected. You must get your exact size with a professional. You’ll find free fittings at many department stores nowadays.
The most important things are: you need a bra that fits your shoulders, sits smoothly under your clothes, and doesn’t create any kind of bulges or gaps.
Also, make sure to replace your bras every 6–12 months because they lose elasticity over time.
Trust me on this one. Without a good bra, even the most expensive outfit won’t look right. And I’m sorry to be so blunt, but it’s true!
2. Invest in Quality High-Waisted Jeans
SaveOne thing we can’t ignore about high-waisted jeans: they’re super flattering for most body types, even if you’re over 40.
They also hide the tummy area if you don’t feel confident about it. And let’s be real—most of us carry a little more weight in the middle as we get older.
You can wear them on almost any occasion. Why? Because you can pair them with all kinds of tops: crop tops, blouses, blazers, cute little cardigans… and so on. You’ll never run out of options.
Go for dark washes, they’re more versatile and slimming.
3. Find Your Go-To Formal Outfit
SaveIt’s important to have at least one formal outfit ready in your closet at all times.
You never know when you’ll get a last-minute invitation to an event, work function, or family gathering. You need to look put-together in no time.
So here’s what I want you to do: go to your wardrobe right now (okay, maybe after reading this post 😅) and put together one killer formal outfit—the one that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Don’t wear it to regular events; keep it special.
It might be a little black dress with the right accessories or a chic pantsuit that fits perfectly. Whatever makes you feel amazing.
This will save you from stress, wasted time, and those last-minute shopping trips that usually end in disaster.
4. Master the Art of Shapewear
We can’t ignore that shapewear can be a total game-changer when used the right way.
But here’s the catch: shapewear should enhance what you’ve got, not squeeze you into a completely different shape. If you can’t breathe or move comfortably, you’re doing it wrong.
Good shapewear smooths everything out and creates clean lines under your clothes. It should boost your confidence, not make you miserable all day.
I have different pieces for different outfits—some for under dresses, others for fitted tops. The key is finding what works for your body and your comfort level.
Colors and Styling Secrets
5. Discover Your Best Colors
You can’t miss this one! Finding colors that look fabulous on your skin can take years off your appearance.
You need to figure out your undertones—warm, cool, or neutral. I know it sounds complicated, but it’s actually pretty simple once you get the hang of it.
Here’s a quick test: hold up a piece of white paper and a piece of cream paper next to your face in natural light. Which one makes your skin look healthier and brighter? If it’s white, you’re probably cool-toned. If it’s cream, you’re likely warm-toned.
Jewel tones like emerald, sapphire, and deep ruby often look stunning on mature skin. And here’s a secret from my styling days: navy is usually more flattering than black for most people over 40. Black can look harsh near the face, while navy is softer and more forgiving.
Don’t be afraid of color! It can actually make you look more youthful and vibrant.
6. Follow the One Bold Element Rule
SaveThis is one of my favorite tricks that I use with all my clients—regardless of age.
The rule is simple: choose one statement piece per outfit. One bold color, one crazy print, one dramatic texture—but just one.
Keep everything else neutral and simple. This prevents you from looking too busy or like you got dressed in the dark.
For example, if you’re wearing a bright red blazer, keep your top and bottom neutral. If you’ve got a fun floral dress, keep your accessories simple and classic.
It makes putting outfits together so much easier, and you’ll always look intentional and polished. Trust me, this rule has saved me countless times!
7. Embrace Monochromatic Dressing
SaveMonochromatic dressing is a great way to look polished.
You don’t have to match everything exactly—in fact, it looks better if you don’t. Mix light blue with navy, or cream with camel. It’s totally okay as long as you stay in the same color family.
This creates a long, lean line that’s super flattering. It also makes you look taller and more streamlined. Plus, it’s almost impossible to mess up once you understand the concept.
I love doing this with neutrals, but it works with any color. Try different shades of pink or various blues. You’ll look like you hired a professional stylist!
8. Skip Horizontal Stripes (With One Exception)
I know, I know—everyone has that classic striped shirt. And if you love yours, keep wearing it! But here’s the thing: horizontal stripes can make you appear wider than you actually are.
Vertical or diagonal lines are better. They’re more flattering because they create length instead of width.
But here’s the exception—if you have a pear-shaped body: Horizontal stripes on top can actually help balance your proportions. So there’s always a but…
When in doubt, go for solid colors or subtle vertical patterns. They’re more universally flattering and easier to style.
9. Show Off Your Best Assets
SaveEveryone—and I mean everyone—has something about their body they love. Your job is to find that feature and highlight it.
Maybe you have gorgeous shoulders? Try off-shoulder tops, statement sleeves, or cute cap sleeves that draw attention up there.
Love your legs? Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t wear shorter skirts because of your age. That’s complete nonsense! If you’ve got great legs, show them off with confidence.
For me, it’s my waist. I love belting things and wearing fit-and-flare styles that emphasize that area. It makes me feel feminine and put-together.
The point is: focus on what you love instead of trying to hide what you don’t. Confidence in your best features makes your entire outfit work better.
10. Avoid the Oversized Trap
SaveThis is a big one! So many women think baggy clothes will hide their flaws, but they do the opposite: They make you look bigger overall.
I used to see clients who looked like they were drowning in fabric. It wasn’t flattering on anyone.
What you want is clothes that skim your body and move with you. Not tight, not baggy—just the right fit.
If you love the oversized trend (and I get it, comfort is important), here’s how to do it right: choose ONE oversized piece per outfit. Oversized blazer with fitted jeans. Flowy top with skinny pants. You get the idea.
Balance is everything in fashion!
11. Say No to Boxy Styles
Boxy clothes are honestly the enemy of every woman, regardless of age. They make everyone look shapeless and… well, boxy.
Even if you want to camouflage certain areas, boxy isn’t the answer. What you need is structure—clothes that create shape and give you a beautiful silhouette.
Look for pieces with some waist definition, even if it’s subtle. A little bit of tailoring goes such a long way in making clothes look expensive and flattering.
Remember: you want to look like a woman with curves and femininity, not like you’re wearing a cardboard box!
12. Choose the Right Shorts Length
Can we please stop with the “women over 40 can’t wear shorts” rule?
If you want to wear shorts, wear them. The key is finding the right length for your body.
The most flattering length usually hits at the narrowest part of your thigh—not too long, not too short. You’ll know it when you see it.
Avoid those longer shorts that hit right at the knee. They’re not flattering on anyone and look dated. Also skip the super straight, up-and-down styles.
Look for shorts with some shape—maybe fitted at the waist and hips, then slightly looser through the leg. Much more modern and flattering.
If you feel confident in them, rock those shorts!
Smart Shopping and Wardrobe Building
13. Follow the 80/20 Spending Rule
This is hands down my favorite shopping tip. You need to try it.
Keep 80% of your clothing budget for quality basics, and the remaining 20% for fun, trendy pieces. Because basics are what you’ll actually wear most often.
Think about it—how often do you reach for that crazy sequined top vs. your favorite jeans or that perfect white shirt?
Good basics make getting dressed so much easier. And as women over 40, we appreciate anything that makes our lives simpler, right?
14. Create Your Go-To Daily Outfit Formula
SaveHere’s a trick that will save you so much time and mental energy.
Pick one outfit combo that always works for your lifestyle and makes you feel great. For me, it’s good jeans, a nice top, and some kind of jacket or cardigan.
Then, swap out one piece at a time to create “new” outfits. Same jeans and top, but with a blazer instead of a cardigan. Or the same formula, but with a different top.
This way, you free yourself from the daily guesswork. You’ll never run out of options—even on those crazy busy mornings when you can barely think straight.
15. Shop Your Closet First
Before you even think about buying anything new, I want you to go through what you already have. And I mean really go through it.
Try on combinations you’ve never tried before. Look at your clothes with fresh eyes. You might be surprised by what you find!
While you’re at it, get rid of anything that doesn’t fit properly or doesn’t make you feel amazing. Life’s too short for clothes that don’t spark joy.
Reviewing your closet from time to time helps you see new possibilities in the clothes you already own.
16. Invest in a Quality Structured Handbag
SaveA good handbag is like jewelry for your outfit. It adds that final cherry on top—even to the most basic look.
Structured bags always look more expensive and polished than slouchy ones. They also hold their shape better over time, so they’re actually a smarter investment.
You don’t need to spend thousands of dollars either. There are great options at every price point. Just look for clean lines, quality hardware, and a classic shape.
And please, don’t go too big! Oversized bags can overwhelm your frame and actually make you look shorter. Stick to medium-sized bags that are proportional to your body.
Styling Tricks That Work
17. Always Tuck In Your Tops
SaveIt’s a simple trick, but it can make a huge difference!
Tucking in your top makes any outfit look more put-together and polished. It defines your waist and creates cleaner lines.
It works with everything—jeans, skirts, shorts, dress pants. If you’re self-conscious about your tummy area, try a half-tuck (just tuck in the front) or a loose tuck.
NGL, this one little change will make you look so much more intentional and stylish.
18. Add a Third Layer
SaveOutfits with three layers always look more complete and interesting than two-layer outfits. I don’t know why, but it’s true!
Think: top + bottom + jacket/cardigan/scarf/vest. That third layer pulls everything together and adds sophistication—even to simple outfits.
A blazer is probably the easiest third layer because it works with almost everything. But don’t be afraid to experiment with cardigans, denim jackets, or lightweight scarves.
This one’s especially great for us because layering is practical too—you can adjust for temperature changes throughout the day.
19. Master the Right Amount of Skin
SaveHere’s a styling rule that works for everyone: show skin in one area at a time, not everywhere at once.
If you’re wearing a short skirt, balance it with a more covered-up top. If you’ve got on an off-shoulder blouse, pair it with longer pants or a midi skirt.
This creates intrigue and looks sophisticated instead of… well, like you’re trying too hard.
It’s not about covering everything up—it’s about balance and being intentional about what you’re highlighting.
20. Choose Pointed-Toe Shoes
This is such an easy way to make your legs look longer and your whole silhouette more elegant.
Pointed-toe shoes elongate your legs and make you appear taller, even in flats. Round toes can make your feet look stubby and cut off your leg line.
You don’t need sky-high heels either. Pointed-toe flats, low heels, or even ankle boots work great.
This one simple shoe choice can make a big difference in how polished and put-together you look.
Accessories and Finishing Touches
21. Embrace Pearl Jewelry
SaveOkay, I know what you’re thinking. “Pearls are so old-fashioned!” But hear me out.
Pearls are actually chic and timeless. They add instant elegance to any outfit, and they’re not just for your grandmother anymore.
Start simple – maybe pearl stud earrings or a classic single-strand necklace. You can even mix pearls with other jewelry for a more modern look.
I promise you, pearls will make you look more sophisticated and polished. Try them and see!
22. Accessorize Every Single Outfit
Accessories are what make an outfit. They’re not optional extras – they’re essential!
At the very minimum, you should have earrings, a watch or bracelet, and a bag. But don’t stop there. Add a scarf, a belt, some fun jewelry – whatever speaks to you.
The key is not to go crazy. A few well-chosen accessories look much better than piling on everything you own.
This is where you can really let your personality shine through!
23. Belt Everything You Can
SaveBelts are magic, I swear. They define your waist, create shape, and instantly make you look more polished.
Try belting cardigans, blazers, dresses, even oversized tops. It’s amazing what a belt can do for your silhouette.
Invest in a few good belts in neutral colors – black, brown, and maybe cognac or navy. Different widths work for different outfits and occasions.
When in doubt, add a belt. It usually helps!
24. Invest in Quality Sunglasses
SaveGood sunglasses are like instant glamour. They make you look more put-together and mysterious at the same time.
Plus, they protect your eyes and the delicate skin around them, which is especially important as we get older.
Choose classic shapes that flatter your face. Tortoiseshell and black are the most versatile colors.
Think of sunglasses as jewelry for your face. They’re worth the investment!
Modern Updates for Classic Style
25. Try Jumpsuits
SaveIf you don’t have at least one jumpsuit in your closet, you’re missing out!
Jumpsuits are comfortable but look incredibly put-together. They create a long, lean line that’s super flattering, and they’re perfect for those days when you can’t decide what to wear.
They work for both casual and dressed-up occasions too. Add sneakers and a denim jacket for casual, or heels and statement jewelry for evening.
Plus, they’re so comfortable. Who doesn’t want to look chic while feeling like they’re wearing pajamas?
26. Don’t Fear Trends – Adapt Them
You don’t have to follow every single trend, but don’t ignore them completely either.
The easiest way to incorporate trends is through accessories. Trendy earrings, a fun bag, or the season’s hot shoe style can update your whole wardrobe without breaking the bank.
Choose trends that work with your lifestyle and body type. Not everything is meant for everyone, and that’s okay!
Take inspiration from what’s current, but make it work for YOU.
27. Update Your Hairstyle Regularly
Your hair should complement your style, not fight against it.
A good haircut is more important than following every hair trend. Find a stylist you trust and get regular trims to keep everything looking fresh and polished.
Don’t be afraid to try something new either. Sometimes a small change can make a huge difference in how modern and current you look.
28. Mix High and Low Price Points
You absolutely do not need designer everything to look amazing.
Splurge on pieces you’ll wear constantly – like a great coat, perfect jeans, or quality shoes. Save money on trendy pieces you might not love next season.
Sometimes the less expensive option is actually better anyway. It’s all about how you put everything together, not how much you spent.
Confidence and Attitude
29. Ignore Age-Related “Rules”
Can we please stop with all these arbitrary fashion rules about age? They’re mostly outdated nonsense anyway.
If you love something and it makes you feel confident and happy, wear it. Your joy and confidence are worth more than some random person’s opinion about what’s “age-appropriate.”
The only fashion rule that really matters is this: does it make you feel like the best version of yourself?
30. Dress for Your Current Life
This is so important! Your wardrobe should reflect the life you’re actually living right now, not the life you had ten years ago or the life you think you should have.
If you work from home, don’t fill your closet with business suits. If you’re active and outdoorsy, make sure you have cute athletic wear.
Buy clothes for the body you have now and the activities you actually do. It sounds simple, but you’d be surprised how many people get this wrong.
