Summer is calling, and I can already feel the warm sand between my toes!
For most, if not all of us, organizing what to wear to the beach is as thrilling as the whole trip is. That’s why I created this comprehensive guide to the basics of beachwear that will make you look great while keeping you cool.
Let’s be honest – finding that perfect balance between style, comfort, and sun protection isn’t always easy. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with everything you need to build a versatile beach wardrobe that’ll take you from sunrise yoga sessions to sunset dinner dates.
Ready to dive in? Let’s start with one of my favorite topics – colors!
Color Palette for Beach Attire
Light and Neutral Colors
SaveI can’t get along without white, cream, and beige for a beach vacation. These colours not only reflect sunlight and keep you cooler but they are extremely easy to mix and match.
Consider this: A white linen shirt is a shirt that can go with just about anything in your suitcase! Not to mention, neutral colors with a beach theme are just so classy. Believe me, these are classics you do not want to miss.
Bright and Vibrant Colors
SaveSo if you’re looking to really go with the vibe of the vacation, bright colors will be your best friend! Coral, turquoise, and sunny yellow – not only are they gorgeous but they’re great for beach settings.
And a secret from my travel photos: bright hues make terrific ocean backgrounds. If you’re thinking of taking all your Instagram photos near the beach, pack them all those colorful ones!
Pastel Shades
SaveThe soft pink, mint green and lavender are the most feminine and dreamy beach colors. I love wearing pastels for beach walking at sunrise/sunset as they tend to shine in the golden hour light.
Oh, and these light colours don’t hurt the eyes if you have to look at bright sunlight for hours each day.
Classic Patterns
SaveLet’s talk patterns! Here are my go-to choices:
- Stripes – Nothing says nautical chic quite like stripes
- Florals – Perfect for those tropical vacation vibes
- Geometric prints – For a modern, fashion-forward appeal
Essential Summer Beach Attire Pieces
Now let’s get into the fun part – building your beach wardrobe!
Dresses
Sundresses
SaveMy go-to beach vacation items are sundresses. I always take at least 3! Choose light-colored, breathable materials such as cotton, linen, or chiffon that won’t cling to your body when it’s hot.
The best part? They can simply be dropped over your bikini when you need to get lunch at the local beach bar. A-line and flowy will work well – this gives you room to move around and won’t stick to you when you are sweaty.
Maxi Dresses
SaveMaxi dresses are ideal if you’re concerned about sun protection or simply want that extra coverage. They’re good for your legs and make you look effortlessly chic.
Opt for fabric that allows for air to circulate to prevent over heating, and personally like wrap styles as it gives the option for a snug fit. Ideal for those post lunch beach days!
Shirt Dresses
SaveLet’s take a look at this unique item you may not have thought of – shirt dresses! They are easy to put on and can be worn open as a fashion statement.
They provide you with a structured, yet comfortable appearance that will fit in any environment.
Tops
Tank Tops
SaveThis sleeveless style will provide you with maximum airflow, an essential attribute in beach heat. I like to wear them underneath light cardigans or shirts for sun protection.
Pro tip: If you plan on doing any beach activities, then be sure to select moisture-wicking fabrics. Don’t be afraid to go with different cuts of a neckline, scoop, V-neck, or racerback; all work well!
Crop Tops
SaveLooking to flaunt that sandals look? Crop tops are fashionable and ideal for yuppie types (or people with a young heart! ).
Stitch them together with high-waisted bottoms for a sexy, but not over-the-top outfit. They’re also great for beach volleyball or other activities!
Camisoles
SaveCamisoles are stunning for a more dainty and feminine choice. The adjustable straps allow you to make it just the right fit, and the different material options such as silk or satin, are stunning for nightly strolls on the beach.
I love to add them under sheer cover-ups for a sophisticated look.
Shirts
Linen Shirts
SaveMay I say how super cool linen is for the beach weather? This natural fibre is breathable, light, and continually improves over time.
Linen shirts can be worn to dress up or as a cover-up. They are fitted and oversized, so opt for what you’re comfortable with!
Cotton Button-Downs
SaveA classic white cotton button-down is a wardrobe staple that really shines at the beach. For a casual beach vibe, roll up the sleeves or tie at the waist for a flattering silhouette.
Honestly, if you only pack one shirt, make it this one!
Cover-Ups
Kaftans
SaveI’m so into kaftans! They are loose, flowing, and so very comfortable, and they have the most beautiful prints and embellishments.
They’re simple to slip on over damp swimwear, and they offer complete coverage whilst keeping you in style. What’s not to love?
Sarongs
SaveTalk about versatile! A sarong can be used as a garment for a skirt, dress, or shoulder wrap. They are compact, breathable, and dry easily.
At least two, always in different colors or patterns.
Tunics
SaveThe side slits make it easy to move, and tunics provide more coverage with their longer length.
Some are interchangeable with shorts for casual wear, and I just love embroidery or beading on them for that little extra special touch.
Shorts
Denim Shorts
SaveYou can’t go wrong with classic denim shorts! High-waisted styles are super flattering and on-trend right now.
Distressed details play a key role in the perfect casual beach look, and they are suitable for any type of top. Simply a vacation must-have!
Linen Shorts
SaveWhen it’s hot, I go for linen shorts for maximum comfort. The loose fitting provides ventilation (and this is very important in humidity!) and neutral shades suit all beach outfits.
Ideal for walking on the beach or for sightseeing trips!
Athletic Shorts
SaveAre you looking to plan some beach activities? Moisture-absorbing athletic shorts are a must-have. Seek out ones that have an integrated compression and water-absorbing properties.
Can we enjoy real pocketed shorts? Game-changer!
Pants
Palazzo Pants
SaveThe wide-leg design of palazzo pants allows amazing airflow, making them surprisingly cool in hot weather. They look chic enough for beach dinners, but comfortable enough for all-day wear.
The majority of them feature elastic waistbands – hello vacations, eating! – and the move makes a lovely silhouette.
Capri Pants
SaveThree-quarter length pants offer more coverage and are cooler than long length pants. They are super versatile for a number of beach activities, and stretch fabrics signify all-day comfort.
Beach Pants
SaveThey are lightweight pants that are frequently semi-sheer and are engineered for use at the beach. They are practical and stylish with drawstrings, elastic waistbands, and quick-drying synthetic material.
Skirts
Wrap Skirts
SaveMy favorite skirt, wrap skirts, come in a variety of sizing options so I can wear them all day long, regardless of how many beach meals I’ve consumed! They can be worn over swimwear and are definitely flattering on a variety of body shapes.
Plus, you can tie them in various lengths, depending on your mood!
Maxi Skirts
SaveThese offer a great amount of sun protection as well and are very feminine and flowy like maxi dresses. They make for long summer days and can be easily dressed up or down.
Mini Skirts
SaveMini skirts are ideal for understated legs for a youthful, playful look. I believe they are best paired with longer tops for a complete look and work well for things done at nighttime on the beach.
Swimsuits
One-Piece Swimsuits
SaveI love one-pieces, and they are back in style, and I am here for it! They’re a classic, elegant style that provides more support for larger busts.
Oh, and they offer sun protection for the torso, too, and they are available in such a dazzling variety of necklines and back designs.
Bikinis
The beauty of bikinis is the combination and contrasting potential! They are better for tanning, less constraining for bathroom breaks (no promises), and there are those that provide no coverage to full coverage.
Know what you’re good at and go for it!
Tankinis
The perfect compromise! Cover up with a one-piece, wear a tankini. The tank top is a more flattering fit for the middle and is useful for active beach sports.
Cardigans
Light Cardigans
SaveCardigans that are made with both cotton and linen are ideal for summer’s breezy evening strolls to the beach, or as a daytime shoulder covering.
I love that they can be quickly tucked around your waist if not in use. So practical!
Kimono-Style Cardigans
These are making such a moment! These loose, flowing sleeves are extremely comfortable and can also be quite beautiful. They are multifunctional and can serve as a cover-up, making them perfect for adding a bohemian touch to any outfit.
Accessories
Sun Hats
Don’t forget to wear a sun hat, ladies! Large brims are necessary for the protection of the face and neck. Floppy hats are fashionable, easy to pack, and have natural air circulation, while straw hats are breathable.
Pro tip: invest in one with a chin strap to prevent loss due to ocean breezes!
Sunglasses
UV protection is a must-have – your eyes will thank you! Oversized styles are in fashion and provide greater protection, while polarized lenses get rid of that harsh glare in the water.
Secure straps are an option to consider for water activities.
Beach Bags
A great beach bag is necessary! Find large totes that will hold all of your necessities, waterproof and water-resistant. Lots of pockets for organization and mesh bags work well because sand goes through them!
Jewelry
It’s best to keep it simple and waterproof! Salt and water won’t affect stainless steel or silicone parts. I really enjoy beach-related designs incorporating shells or coral, as well as anklets and toe rings.
Shoes
Flip-Flops
SaveThe beach classic! Easy to put on and take off, quick drying fabrics, and simple to fancy designs. Be sure that they are actually comfortable walking on sand!
Sandals
Whether it’s for dinner or not, strappy sandals can be dressed up, and wedge heels add height without sinking in the sand. Look for comfortable footbeds since you’ll likely be wearing them all day.
Water Shoes
These are a MUST when going to rocky beaches or participating in water sports! They insulate your feet from sharp rocks and shells, dry quickly, and have grip soles on wet surfaces.
Espadrilles
The rope soles shout “beach vacation” for all the right reasons! Available in flat or wedge options with canvas or fabric uppers, they’re perfect for those beach-to-dinner transitions.
